A reliquary is a container for relics, often the bones of saints. The horse is often a symbol of innocence due to the many sacrifices it has made to man, particularly in battle; what could be more saintly? The skeleton diagram here names horses who have died, been injured or fought in warfare. The horse silhouette is in the levade position, a dressage move, which often equestrian portraits of monarchy and military leaders are portrayed doing as it is seen as a very hard maneuver to accomplish, therefore shows the command of the rider. The horse Whistlejacket, by George Stubbs is also painted in the levade position, although this painting is famous for having no rider or background, and purely focuses on the horse
